Comtrust user certificate can be thought of as your digital identity card / passport on the Internet. A user certificate provides you the ability to prove your identity over the Internet. In addition to vouching for your identity, your digital certificate will also enable you to encrypt and digitally sign emails thus ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of your communications.

For email communication, encryption alone is not enough, as it provides no proof of the identity of the sender of an encrypted message. Digital certificates combine the ease of use of password based access control with the sophistication and security of Public Key Cryptography making them one of the most reliable methods to authenticate users on the Internet or any public access network. A public key cryptography system uses two different keys to lock and unlock (encrypt and decrypt) messages and files. The two keys are mathematically linked together. An individual’s public key is distributed to other users and is used by them to encrypt messages being sent to the individual. The individual keeps the private key secret and uses it to decrypt messages sent with public key.

User Certificates are issued to individuals only. Currently, the following are eligible to apply for Comtrust Class 1 user certificates.

• UAE nationals

• Emirates Internet Users

• UAE residents and their dependents

By obtaining a Comtrust User certificate you will be able to send and receive secure, encrypted and digitally signed messages. In addition, Comtrust digital certificates will also allow you to authenticate yourself to web servers enabling you to securely browse and shop through the web by using secured socket layer (SSL) protocol. Comtrust digital certificates can also be used to create secure communications between business partners, across an enterprise or in an extranet environment.
