Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is a system of digital certificates, data encryption, trusted third party certification and registration authorities that verify and authenticate the validity of each party involved in an Internet transaction. PKI has risen to the challenge of providing means for authenticating individuals and businesses involved in Internet transactions. Certificate Authorities (CAs) uses a PKI to issue digital certificates that are in effect virtual identities for businesses and individuals. Digital certificates can be thought of as electronic ID cards that can be used only on the Internet. The digital certificates provide a secure environment for interaction over the web. Certificates issued by a CA can be verified online for their authenticity and validity.
